Department provides documentation of compliance.
The Department of the Interior had paused the lease of federal lands for oil and gas extraction as a part of President Biden’s plan “of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.” These actions, which went into effect at the start of the president’s term in office, were challenged by the state of Louisiana. Due to a court injunction, the Interior was required to continue leasing land until the case is decided.
The Interior Department announced last week that it had complied with the legal requirements of the injunction. The department also followed a reporting requirement indicating that the land was still being leased. The department expressed that the injunction opposed the president’s stated energy policy.
